The practice has completed a wide range of projects, from house extensions to apartment developments and from new build to restoration projects. A cross section of recent work is shown below.
Private Apartment, Belfast: Extension and Alterations Located in leafy south Belfast, this project transformed the rear of a Victorian residence to provide a new, bright, kitchen/ dining area and patio overlooking the trees and shrubs of a mature garden. The project also included sensitive alterations to the apartment to provide a new bathroom; an en-suite shower room to the master bedroom; an additional bedroom with en-suite shower room and a utility room. The extension and interiors are both contemporary and sympathetic to the existing building. Materials and fittings were carefully chosen with function and durability in mind. The kitchen and dining area feature: Italian ceramic floor tiles; lacquered kitchen units; coloured glass splash backs; underfloor heating and high performance glazing to limit heat loss and solar gain.
16 Howard Street, Belfast: New Offices Alastair Macnab Architects was appointed by Windmill Restaurants Ltd to design the fit-out of their new offices in Belfast. Located on the upper floors of an existing 1980’s office building the project provided a reception area, open plan and cellular offices, interview, meeting and training rooms and other ancillary accommodation. Full height double glazed partitions with integral blinds were installed to allow natural light to flow into the interiors whilst maintaining acoustic and visual privacy. Good artificial lighting to supplement natural lighting and a restrained palette of materials and colours help to create a comfortable work environment.
Past Times, The Outlet, Banbridge Alastair Macnab Architects was appointed by Past Times to design the fit-out of it’s new store at The Outlet, Banbridge. The project included a sales area, storeroom, combined kitchen and staff room and an accessible toilet. The lighting and air-conditioning units are suspended within the double height space to provide lighting and air-conditioning where needed. This also reduces the apparent height of the sales area and helps to create an intimate space.
Restaurant: Leeds A new restaurant for Burger King, this project involved the fit-out of the ground and first floors of a Grade 2 listed Victorian building in Briggate, Leeds. The project provides customer seating on two floors; a kitchen and servery; manager’s office; customer, disabled and staff toilets and other ancillary accommodation. In addition the works required the design and installation of a new staircase between the ground and first floor and the restoration of a listed stone spiral staircase to the rear of the building.
Food Outlet: Connswater Shopping Centre, Belfast One of six food court outlets designed by the practice, this project for Burger King provides a kitchen and servery; manager’s office; staff rest room; staff changing room and other ancillary accommodation. The plan for the outlet is highly functional to enable an efficient and friendly service to customers. A stepped counter and menu board profile and formica clad side panels provide colour and interest to the front of the unit.
Restaurant: Londonderry/ Derry One of five restaurants designed by the practice, this project for Burger King at the Millennium Forum in Londonderry/ Derry, provides customer seating on two floors; a kitchen and servery; customer, disabled and staff toilets and other ancillary accommodation. In addition the works included the design and installation of a staircase between the ground and first floor. Exposed services, neon strip lighting and steel balustrades add to the urban diner theme of the restaurant.
Private House, Belfast: Extension and alterations Located in a quiet residential area in east Belfast, this project involved the extension and alteration of a 1930’s house to provide a new kitchen; utility room; store room and ground floor toilet. The extension has been specifically designed to relate to the existing house both in terms of its scale and in its use of similar materials and colours. Large sliding patio doors help to create a light and spacious kitchen and can be opened out to the garden on warm summer days.
Private House, Comber: Extensions Located in Comber, Co. Down, this project involved extensions to a 1960’s house to provide an enlarged entrance hall; a utility room and a ground floor toilet. The design complements the original 60’s house with its projecting flat roof and large rectangular windows. The roof also provides shelter and protection against the sun, to create a comfortable and inviting space.
